Well Autumn is very much here, and amongst the grey over cast days we have been having the odd, sunny, bright blue sky, cold and bracing days; my favourite. The light is beautiful, the trees are golden and the thought of digging out hats, gloves and wearing a big warm jumper fills me with rather a good feeling!
For some though, the change is not ideal, some people will feel tired, sad, low in energy. For some the approach to winter fills them with anguish. Using essential oils at this time of year can bring relief to those who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
SAD is a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern. Symptoms are worse during the colder, darker winter months and sufferers report feelings of low energy, irritability, lethargy, changes to appetite & sleep patterns. For some this can have a huge impact on their daily lives!
Massage is known to alleviate depression and with the added benefits of essential oils, an aromatherapy treatment may be just what you need.
The citrus oils are a wonderful way to remind us of warm sunny days, the wood oils bring comfort and strength to us. The flower oils will nourish you and soothe you, and the spices will warm you up and energise you.
You could use the oils in a diffuser, add them to a bath or make your own blend in a vegetable oil and apply the blend on days when the sky is grey or overcast or you feel low in energy.
Try this blend to lift your mood & soothe you, to 20 ml of vegetable oil add:
2 drops Geranium – Pelargonium graveolens
4 drops Bergamot- Citrus bergamia
2 drops Atlas Cedarwood – Cedrus atlanticus
For energy and warmth add the following to 20ml of vegetable oil
3 drops Ginger – Zingiber officinale
3 drops May Chang – Litsea cubeba
2 drops Cardamon – Ellettaria cardamomum
A regular treatment could also brig relief for you at this time. For most sufferers they do report feeling better once the season turns towards the Spring (well who doesn’t?) and its only 6 weeks until the shortest day!
Do however on days like today, and the sun is streaming through my window right now as I’m writing, get outside, get some sunshine on your face, take a delight in the wonderful changing colours of Autumn and know that the seasons will keep on changing and Spring, as sure as anything, will return.
