Did you know that you can use essential oils in a blend to reduce the discomfort of period pains?
During your period, you may experience abdominal cramping, it is caused by muscles contracting in your uterus as the lining is shed during your menstrual bleed. It is quite common to experience some discomfort; some women will have more cramping than others. If you are at all concerned you should of course consult your GP.
An abdominal massage with a blend of essential oils may bring you some relief
To 20mls of base vegetable oil add the following:
6 drops of Clary Sage – Salvia sclera
4 drops of Geranium – Pelargonium graveolens
Clary sage is an anti-spasmodic, and can be helpful with the spams of menstrual cramping. Geranium is considered a hormonal balancing essential oil, it also has a very pleasant aroma.
Lie on your back with your knees slightly bent and imagine a clock on your tummy with 12 O’clock above your belly button. Take a small amount of the oil into one hand, and in clock wise circles massage around your belly button.
Start gently, building pressure as you go to your own level of comfort. Apply the blend up to twice a day during your period when the cramping is the most uncomfortable. You can also apply the blend to the lower back, for this you will obviously need to stand or at least sit up. Again, start gently and build the pressure.
The massage, in itself, will ease the cramps. With the addition of the essential oils you will hopefully put a stop to your period pains.
You may also find relief by placing a hot water bottle over your abdomen, it is also advisable to take some gentle exercise.
Having regular aromatherapy treatments may help you manage your hormonal cycle, if you are interested please do get in touch.
