You have just found out that you are pregnant. Your life is about to change big time!!

I would like to share a quote with you from one of my favourite authors, Barbara Kingsolver from her book ‘Animal Dreams’ when the character discovers she is pregnant………

“Those first few weeks are an unearthly season.  From the outside you remain so ordinary, no one can tell from looking that you have experienced an earthquake of the soul.  You’ve been torn asunder invested with an accident, incomprehensible magic.  It’s the one thing we never quite get over, that we contain our own future.”

This quote moves me every time I read it, such powerful stuff!

How are you feeling?

You may be feeling anxious, excited, scared, or all of the above! At first it is your secret and possibly only you and partner will know. You may choose to keep it that way until you reach the end of your first trimester, you may want to shout it from the roof tops! Whatever you decide, it will be the right decision because it’s your decision; and this will be the first of many that you will have to make over the next months and years as you move from a woman to a mother.

You may start to think about how you want to look after yourself and your growing baby. There are many options out there, Yoga, Aqua natal, Massage, books and internet sites galore telling you what to eat, drink, and even what to wear! Some of it confusing, and often contradictory.

One thing is for sure, this is a special time and you should definitely do something for you! However you may need a little support and you can very easily use a few essential oils safely and effectively in the first few months.

The easiest way to use oils in the first trimester is simply to smell them!  Here are three that can help you through those first few months!

Peppermint – Mentha piperita is excellent for morning sickness.

Mint has been use for centuries to quell nausea and as a digestive aid. How many times have you been offered a peppermint T after a heavy meal? Many cultures finish their evening meal with doing just that!

Just 1 drop of Peppermint on a tissue and inhaled could make the difference between you being able to continue with your day or you feeling green around the gills! Many of my clients over the years have used peppermint in this way during their first trimester to keep morning sickness at bay.

Neroli – Citrus aurantium var. amara is considered to be the ‘rescue remedy’ of essential oils.

Ok so you have a big presentation to give at work, nobody knows about your news, you are feeling a little nervous. 1 drop of Neroli on a tissue will calm your nerves and leave you feeling relaxed!

Frankincense – Boswellia carteri – is an ancient oil distilled from the resin of the Frankincense tree and has been used for centuries in many cultures and included in religious rituals.

You are feeling anxious about your pregnancy and how this amazing happening is going to change you. Any big change brings feelings of anxiety or fear. 1 drop of Frankincense on a tissue and inhaled can make you feel revived yet relaxed. It has the ability to calm the breath and create space.

I would just like to add that at no point should you use these oils instead of orthodox medical care, if you are concerned about anything to do with your pregnancy consult your midwife.
