World Menopause Day

October is Menopause Awareness Month and today is Menopause Awareness Day.

One day we won’t need to have an awareness month or day, as everyone will just consider it to be a normal thing….when we talk about something that is not fully understood; when we share our stories; when we can talk about something openly then it becomes normal and accepted.

Why Menopause is not fully understood goes back partly to education, only since the start of the academic year 2020 was the subject of Menopause added to the school curriculum.

Menopause is a natural occurrence for all women, just as puberty is a natural process for all of us! Knowing what is happening to you is vital for your journey through Menopause, it’s not something to be fixed!

There are so many useful sites, Instagram accounts, Facebook pages, that didn’t exist a few years back, where women are sharing their stories and learning why the changes are occurring and what they can to do to support themselves. Understanding something gives you power and control!

For me, I believe, it’s a multifaceted approach and you will have to do a bit of exploring to see what works for you, just like all other big life transitions, everyone will experience their Menopause differently. Changes in your eating habits, finding a form of exercise that you enjoy, exploring yoga or meditation, having regular complementary support like Aromatherapy, Acupuncture, Homeopathy or taking Herbal remedies…any of these can be very beneficial.

Some women undoubtedly suffer more than others and common symptoms include

  • Skin changes
  • Achy joints
  • Hot flushes
  • Loss of libido
  • Brain fog
  • Sleep Disturbances
  • Mood Swings
  • Anxiety from no discernible cause

Aromatherapy is a truly holistic therapy, so for Menopause, it is ideal. As an Aromatherapist I will look at all of your symptoms, concerns, medical history, lifestyle and choose essential oils accordingly. This can change at every treatment as we are never the same! Most complementary therapies will duplicate that approach.

For me the following essential oils are a wonderful place to start with your aromatic Menopause support:

Rose Otto, Rosa damascena, steam distilled from the petals of the rose. Heady, euphoric and sublime. A little goes a long way. It can truly enhance your femininity, help with feelings of loss and change and is a wonderful skin tonic.

NeroliCitrus aurantium, steamed distilled from the blossom of the Orange Tree. The most exquisite aroma! One drop on a tissue and inhaled will quell anxiety and used in a vegetable oil for a massage blend, its nourishing and restorative for the skin.

Cypress Cupressus Sempervirens, Steam distilled from the leaves and twigs. Cypress is useful for over stretched emotions or when feeling ‘pushed to the limit’. It helps us move through life changes and is regulating for the menstrual cycle, so supportive for the peri-menopause also

Palmarosa Cymbopogon martinii, Steam distilled from the grass of this tropical plant. Cooling and refreshing, physically and emotionally, so helpful for inflamed emotions and over-heated states!

Cardamom – Elettaria cardamomum, Steam distilled from the seeds, it is mentally stimulating and can ring clarity to your thoughts, it will help restore your ‘appetite for life’.

There are many more in my kit that are useful and as I said above it will all depend on what you need for that particular day!

However, or whatever you feel about Menopause, talk about, embrace it, it’s not going away. Educate yourself and others and step into this new chapter of your life!

Do get in touch if you would like more information or to book a consultation and treatment.
