Frankincense – Boswellia carterii – transformation
Its Menopause Awareness Month and over the month of October, I have been taking a look at four essential oils that could support you through perimenopause and beyond. Today, for the last week, I am looking at Frankincense.
The key word for this essential oil is TRANSFORMATION.
Menopause is a deeply personal journey, unique to each of us, just like our experiences with menstruation or, for those who’ve had children, pregnancy. Yet despite these differences, one thing remains true for everyone: menopause marks a significant transition. And with any transition, it’s natural to feel challenged by change.
Frankincense invites reflection, encourages meditation, and gently guides you toward acceptance, an ideal companion as you step into this new chapter and embrace your transformation.
It’s no accident that humanity has turned to frankincense for thousands of years in spiritual and religious rituals across the globe. Often considered the original incense, its timeless appeal lies in its ability to slow the breath, invite stillness into your day, and foster a deep sense of grounding. Frankincense quiets the mental chatter, gently guiding us back into our bodies and reconnecting us with the present moment.
Frankincense can also be used in skin care, it helps heel and restore and is recognised to be useful for ageing skin, being cited as rejuvenating, it also has properties that are anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial.
How to use
Add up to 8 drops of Frankincense to your diffuser to create a calming mindful atmosphere.
Add 1 drop of Frankincense to 5ml of base/vegetable oil (my favourite is Jojoba) for a nourishing face blend.
Add 5 drops of Frankincense to 10ml of base/vegetable oil (my favourite is Jojoba) for a nourishing body blend.
What does it blend with?
Frankincense blends well with many oils. To enhance the mediative quality combine it with Sandalwood or Cedarwood. Or to gently uplift you add any of the citrus family. For skin care I would encourage you to combine it with a floral essential oil, Rose or Neroli, for a truly sumptuous skin care blend.
Moving through menopause can feel overwhelming and scary, women often report that they have ‘lost themselves’. Navigating this natural transition can be hard, but with some small changes essential oils may help you navigate this period of time.
