MENOPAUSE GOES MAINSTREAM

If you haven’t heard, where have you been? Menopause is now a hot topic – no pun intended!  About time I would say!

Menopause will be experienced by every woman which means that all of us are affected, as we all know a fair few women; our Mothers, our daughters, our friends, our partners, our colleagues….the list goes on.

Understanding what is happening, physically and emotionally, for me, is key to embracing this natural transition. Being informed and therefore able to support myself and those around me can only be helpful. You can do the same!

using essential oils in your day-to-day routine can alleviate some of the common symptoms of menopause.

anxiety with no discernible reason!

Ok, so there is plenty to be anxious about in today’s word, but sometimes you are just not sure where or why those anxious feelings are there? Changes to hormone levels will impact your emotional health.

Neroli –Citrus aurantium, steam distilled from the blossom of the orange tree, is rich in a chemical group called Esters. Their pleasing aroma means they are very good at reducing stress and bringing harmony to your day. Neroli is also helpful for when we need a self-esteem boost and often Menopause symptoms can make us feel ‘not quite ourselves’!

Add Neroli to a base oil for a wonderful body massage oil or combine with Orange, Lemon or Bergamot for a wonderful uplifting and positive diffuser blend. Or place one drop on a tissue and inhale as needed.

trouble sleeping?

Disturbed sleep is another common factor of Menopause. There are many sedative essential oils that can offer you some respite.  An hour before going to bed, add the following essential oils to your diffuser, shut the bedroom door and allow the room to become infused with the calming sedative qualities. Then when you are ready for bed, turn off your diffuser, climb into bed and relax!

3 drops of Lavender, Lavandula angustifolia – sedative, calming, nervine tonic

1 drop of Vetiver, Vetiveria zizanoides- grounding, sedative

3 drops of Sweet Orange, Citrus sinensis – soothing, anti-depressant

1 drop of Sandalwood, Santalum album  – sedative, grounding, anti-depressant

joint pain?

As oestrogen declines, one of the physical symptoms of menopause can be experiencing joint pain. Diet, not keeping hydrated, lack of exercise and weight gain are also factors that will exacerbate this. Consider finding an exercise you like, explore changes to your diet and keep drinking that H2O!

There are also some wonderful essential oils that you can add to a vegetable oil and make you own soothing, pain-relieving massage oil that will also nourish your skin. ‘Win Win’ I’d say!

To 20 ml of vegetable oil add the following drops, apply before bed and use within 2 months

3 drops of Sweet/French Marjoram, Origanum marjorana – pain relieving, sedative

4 drops of Frankincense, Boswellia carterii – pain relieving, tonic, skin nourishing

3 drops of Roman Chamomile, Anthemis nobilis – pain relieving, anti-inflammatory, calming, sedative

You could also seek out an aromatherapist who will be able to offer you more solutions for your menopause journey. Massage is a wonderful tool for self-care and for me, at this time, self-care and self-worth are a huge factor in this chapter of my life, make it part of yours too!
