MUM & BABY YOGA
Here is my first summer post from my lovely guest bloggers! Here we meet Fiona Tasker a very experienced yoga teach. Read on to find out all about Mum & Baby Yoga!
Yoga and massage with your baby have become very popular in recent years. Classes vary from those that are basically yoga for the mother and you bring the baby along, to those which focus totally on the baby. I strike a balance, with both postnatal recovery and relaxation for mums and massage and movement for babies – so the classes benefit both of you.
What is baby yoga?
Simple massage, movements and holds to soothe and calm, stimulate and entertain, support development, ease colic & constipation, aid digestion, boost immunity and improve sleep! Above all, baby yoga is an opportunity to connect deeply with your baby in a fun and relaxing way.
Baby Yoga also helps babies to gain greater confidence in their bodies and the world around them as they explore different movements, sounds and people.
How does yoga help mums?
Mums are also on this journey of exploring their bodies, reconnecting after the huge changes of pregnancy and childbirth. Yoga helps to release tired and achy muscles, and gradually rebuild strength and tone. Mums with pelvic or back pain are welcome, and I make a point of keeping exercises simple and easy to follow so that women don’t need any previous yoga experience. That said, many fellow yoga teachers have attended with their babies and also loved it!
As well as physical benefits, yoga encourages greater self-confidence, a mindful approach, and connecting more deeply with your intuition. Yoga classes also provide a supportive circle of women who are going though many of the same challenges, joys, confusions, delights and overwhelm! Through sharing with each other in a calming environment, the groups can form an important part of your support network in the early months of your baby’s life.
What made you decide to teach Mum and Baby Yoga?
I feel that as a society we often take great care of pregnant women, but that once a baby is born the attention shifts wholly to the baby. We can forget that the wellbeing of the baby really does depend on the wellbeing of the mother. The best thing we can do for children is to deeply cherish and celebrate the parents, and in the early postpartum period especially the mother. This is my main aim and motivation!
