WARMING WINTER BLENDS

As the nights draw in and the temperature drops my ‘aromatic preferences’ turn towards more warming and cosy aromas. We tend to spend more time indoors over the winter months so why not fill your home or office with some winter warming essential oils?

A diffuser is a great way to utilise your essential oils as you can add your blend and get on with your day whilst they circulate into your space filling it with your chosen blend.

What to choose?

My first choice would be to choose a spice, Black pepper- Piper nigrum, Cardamom –Elettaria Cardamomum, Cinnamon Leaf, Cinnamomum verum, or Ginger, Zingiber officinale, for example.  The reason for that is that all the ‘spice’ oils have a warm fiery aroma. They can also have a sweet element to their smell therefore adding a sense of joy to the blend. They mostly encourage vitality and energy.

The wood oils for me, really complement the spices and bring a depth to any blend with their balsamic, woody, sometimes clearing aromas. My favourites include Himalayan Cedarwood, Cedrus deodora, Sandalwood, Santalum album or Frankincense, Boswellia carterii. Or if you prefer a more ‘pine type’ aroma you could try Cypress, Cupressus sempervirens or Black Spruce, Picea mariana. All the wood oils allow encourage our breath to slow and facilitate a grounding and calming sensation.

To combat the darker evenings and often gloomy days it’s great to add a little bit of sunshine to your blend and this can be achieved with the citrus family. For most people the citrus essential oils have a strong association with positivity and an uplifting quality, therefore perfect for adding a vibrant top note to your winter blend. My favourites are Sweet Orange- Citrus sinensis, Mandarin, Citrus reticulata or Bergamot, Citrus bergamia. But all the citrus essential oils are great blenders, so use what you have!

Here are a few ideas for you to try at home.

To your diffuser add the following drops:

2 drops of Ginger – Zingiber officinale

2 drops of Sandalwood – Santalum album

4 drops of Sweet Orange – Citrus sinensis

2 drops of Black Pepper – Piper nigrum

3 drops of Cedarwood – Cedrus deodora

3 drops of Bergamot – Citrus bergamia

2 drops of Cardamom – Elettaria Cardamomum

1 drop of Black Spruce – Picea mariana

5 drops of Mandarin – Citrus reticulata

I love having a diffuser going in my hallway or other communal room as that way, everyone gets to appreciate the blend. Enjoy!
